There are some reasons for the horses to sleep standing up.  The way they are built does not allow them to get up quickly when they lie down.  They cannot get up quickly as their back is straight.  They cannot escape when animals like tiger and lion come to hunt them if they are lying on the ground.  They can escape if they are standing.  This habit of sleeping standing up continued even after they became domestic animals.

Horses feel comfortable sleeping in standing up position.  Horses have a heavy body and if they sleep on the ground for a long time its body suffers from pressure because of the weight.  The cells also get damaged.  For these reasons horses sleep standing up.
