Mercury is only the liquid metal at room temperature. One can find this liquid metal when it slips out when the thermometer is broken. It is not possible to catch mercury. This is the only metal which is in liquid form. This shines wonderfully and so it is called ‘Liquid Silver’. Scientific name of liquid metal mercury is Hydrargyrum. This is a Latin name and the meaning of this word is Silver Water. Chemical symbol of Mercury is Hg. Mercury was given its name by people of Rome. When this liquid metal falls on smooth floor it moves very quickly. It reminded the people of Rome, of the Mercury God who was a symbol for intelligence and activeness. Thus they thought that Mercury was the suitable name for this liquid metal. And gradually the word came into usage.
