Many of us would have seen parachutes being used for jumping from aeroplanes and helicopters. Let us see the principle that works for parachute. Parachute opens up like an umbrella while coming down. In this process the air molecules push back against the underside of parachute and slow down it descent. The gravitational pull decreases on the parachutist due to air resistance. Thus the parachutist lands safely.
